The IUCN funded Tree Identification program, undertaken with the long-term goal of building local capacity in natural resource management, is planned as a two-part process.
Currently the Wildlife Club is identifying trees with their common and traditional local names in Makushi, English and Portuguese. In the second phase a tree expert will visit Yupukari and carry out a series of walks and trips with villagers to identify more species more precisely and pass along this knowledge.
Anticipated results include but are not limited to: 1) first steps towards an inventory of tree resources and monitored offtake; 2) expanded participation in environmental monitoring by local youth via the Wildlife Club, and 3) an enriched ecotourism product, contributing to the sustainability of all RLI activities.
